The breaking of the dam at the Aznalcollar mine, in 1997, has been one of the major environmental accidents in the history of Spain. The spill moved towards the Doñana National Park through the Guadiamar River and just before entering Doñana was stoped at Ludio del Cangrejo , a natural reserve of the José María Blanc Foundation. El Lucio was completely devastated by the spill. It was undoubtedly one of the jewels of Doñana, becase some or the rarest species breed there, as the marble duck or the white headed duck among many others. In order to elucidate the possible responsibilities of management, the Foundation commissioned TERRA a legal report and an assessment of the damage to wildlife.
